North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) became law January 1, 1994. In 1988 Canada and the United States agreed to enter into an agreement which was started in January 1989. In 1991, Canada, Mexico and the United States started to establish NAFTA for the countries. NAFTA will remove barriers to backup and investment among Canada, Mexico and the United States. Under the NAFTA guidelines many tariffs were eliminated immediately, with others being eliminated over a period of years.
