Discussion and Conclusion

In order to determine the identity of inglorious organism #9, several structural and biochemical trials were performed. The first turn out conducted, the thou stain, resulted in identification of gibibyte-negative rods. This eliminated all Gram positive rod- executed bacteria on with all Gram negative cocci. The next experiment utilized to ascertain the unidentified was lactose fermentation. The result of this trial was negative, which eliminated Bacillus polymyxa, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The third study conducted was the Indole test. Negative results were determined, eliminating Mycobacterium smegmatis. The following organisms were not significant for the Indole test: Proteus vulgaris, Shigella flexneri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhimurium. Motility was next determined in order to further narrow down the possible organisms. Results from this test indicated that the hidden organism was non-motile. This eliminated Serratia marcescens, Alcaligenes faecalis, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhimurium. With merely a few possible organisms left that identified with the unknown, the O/F test was applied to determine oxygen requirement.



The results were negative, and thereof indicative of a positive facultative anaerobic organism, thus eliminating Mycobacterium smegmatis. Therefore, the only two possible organisms identifying with the same morphological and biochemical characteristics as those of the unknown organism were Shigella dysenteriae and Shigella flexneri. The same process of identification was reviewed in order to verify the identity of the unknown organism. According to the expected results, the unknown organism was in the shape of Gram-negative rods, thus eliminating all Gram-positive rod-shaped along with all Gram negative cocci bacteria.
