Harsh Commentary on Society

Edith Wharton’s The crime syndicate of Mirth creates a vivid representation of New York during the early 1900’s. During this time, there is a mixer hierarchy that separates the upper-class from the lie in of society. Her satirical voice within the novel is written in a very fierce tone, showing her readers the repulsive stead of the community that the people lodge in. For the most part, the characters in The accommodate of Mirth ar portrayed as very upscale, big-chested people that cover up their faults with politeness and kind gestures. Wharton attacks these incorrect images that the people bring forth with an unforgiving attitude, which lets us chicane how she feels about this society.
During this time period, grandiose displays of wealth and prosperity play a very large role in the social circles. It was the center of discussion in most social gatherings and events, and in severalise to feel good about yourself, you must live lavishly. Wharton displays this fact when she narrates, “There was little cash left, but to Mrs. baronet, it seemed worse than nothing—the mere mocker of what she was empower to do. What was the use of bread and butter if one had to live like a pig?”[1] Here, Mr.



Bart has passed away and has left Mrs. Bart and Lily without much to live with. This excerpt is very interesting because it made me ask myself, when is having some money worse than having no money? When Wharton says “the mere mocker of what she was entitled to do”, she suggests that in the eyes of Mrs. Bart, there is no curtilage to live because she did not have the ability to live extravagantly. Wharton displays her harsh feelings towards this society by comparing nourishment the low-life as living like a pig. Even though there are methods of surviving, there is no use in trying because it attacks the ego that has been incorrectly fed for so long.
