I live in the city of Modesto, California and there is little that remains in the city itself of the town and the people that existed in the past. Some cities befuddle retained a section of town as a living monument to the past. Modesto, unfortunately, chose to tear down much of its historical areas in an effort to revitalize the downtown core during the deep 1960s and early 1970s. There are a fewer historical structures that remain such as the wonderful museum in the old McHenry Library and an accurately restored tight-laced-era residence in the McHenry residence hall. I have selected to write about the McHenry augury for my field get away around my neighborhood on the architecture that caught my attention.
The McHenry Mansion, built in 1883 by Robert McHenry who built the home at the expense of $10,000, was a prominent local rancher/banker, is a fine example of the Victorian Italianate style of architecture. Seeing this building in person is breathing spell taking and brings you back in time to the turn of the century.
The Mansion was bought by the Gallo Wine family who saved the house from demolition and donated the Mansion to the city of Modesto which has restored both the exterior and interior and has decorated and equipt the Mansion with antiques appropriate to the period. The McHenry Mansion is on the National shew of Historic places. The Italianate style of architecture was a distinct 19th-century signifier in the history of Classical architecture which was first real in Britain about 1802 by John Nash. The McHenry Mansion is a wooden version of the original Italianate style which has also been nicknamed by some as a Painted Lady.
