August 12, 2004, I was cleaning up the trash from my birthday party. When, same the sound of an undesired alarm clock on a Monday morning, I allow on my fire department pager screaming its alert. This was it, my first functionary call on the fire department. Like a pip-squeak on Christmas morning I was so excited. I rush to my car and drove as fast as I could to the fire house. Only one person beat me to the station. It was my Captain. An ancient man, he had been in the fire service for nearly 40 years. I did not know it at the time, but his violence and knowledge is what would help me through one of the most touchy experiences of my life. As I rushed into the station and towards the rescue team he was sitting in the drivers so-and-so ready to go. As I put on my ambush gear and climbed inside, he looked at me and said Are ya ready, lets roll!
I turned on the requisite lights as we tore off of the station like a horse at the Kentucky Derby.
The ride to the scene felt like it was going by so slow. The sound of our siren and the bright flashes of light pierced the still, silent country night. Like 2 knights riding into battle we planned on what to do when we got to the scene. We put up out later, our planning would be useless. Driving down the unsmooth country roads I noticed the corn almost seemed as tall as our truck. It was almost harvest placate and the smell of fresh field corn permeated the cool summer night. All of a sudden, a soft orange cheekiness appeared over the top of the corn. We had finally arrived on scene.
